Reflection by Rosemary James

Tita Evidente started accompanying Graham technique classes on the piano with Toronto Dance Theatre in the late 70s. For several decades, many generations of company and student dancers from Dance Arts Institute (formerly known as The School of Toronto Dance) had the opportunity to experience her music through embodied movements.

I met Tita in 1983 at the school where I was attending the three year professional training program. Tita always arrived early with her small shopping cart in tow, and sat at the piano reading the daily newspaper, observing students as they entered Studio A for Graham class. Seated on the floor and ready for bounces, the and count was called.

Her piano arrangements pierced through the studio in rhythm and chords that were percussive, dynamic, dark, intense – evoking emotion rooted in the centre of one’s contraction, which followed a phrasing melody and a quality of lightness that felt the inhalation of release, sequentially from the pelvis. Throughout the class, there would be variations of tempos, textures, and moods. It was clear to me back then, that Tita was a wonderful versatile musician with skill and passion for her craft.

Tita’s accompaniment for Graham class was exquisite. There were familiar melodies and improvised compositions that would emanate from her fingers because she knew the form so well. While teaching, she would play for my classes and that was always exciting. I valued her expertise. She regularly shared her opinions – by educating dancers on how they were listening to what was being played. Tita had such respect and understanding of the technique, which allowed dancers to experience the physical journey through her music.

She was well versed, accompanying other genres like ballet and contemporary classes at the School, bringing her artistry and mastery of her piano work. Tita often accompanied the Young Dancers Program on Saturdays which enriched the educational and creative experiences. Her music was inspiring, engaging and heartfelt.

Tita was always supportive of the students, dancers, teachers and her colleagues. She was kind, witty and honest. We had many conversations over the years about life, music and the Graham technique. She used to tell me proudly that Ricardo Abreut, who was a beloved longtime percussionist with TDT, trained her on how to accompany Graham classes. Sometimes the two of them would play together for class. When this happened, it was truly magical.

Whohaw! May you rest in peace Tita Evidente.

On behalf of myself, and the entire TDT family, our extended condolences go out to the family, friends and the whole dance community, mourning the loss of this wonderful human and artist.
