Building on last year’s incredibly successful sold-out show You are the Same, TDT’s twelve dancers and The Hidden Cameras’ musicians come together to create an extraordinary community of performing artists. The physicality of The Hidden Cameras’ lyrics are interpreted and extended by TDT’s dancers through choreographed vignettes to each song, and the ëfull-fledged pop army’ of musicians create a rough-and-ready atmosphere for the often-controlled world of modern dance. This project blurs the lines between dancers and musicians, as the performers step outside their customary roles–band members replace dancers, with the dancers then joining the band throughout the show, creating an ever-changing line-up of artists.
Described as “gay church folk music,” The Hidden Cameras are renowned for their high-energy live shows, and are recent darlings of the experimental alt pop music scene. Staged and structured like a music concert, the show is an equal creative collaboration between House and Gibb. The entire performing space at the Premiere Dance Theatre will be used to create a circus-like atmosphere of playful theatricality and encouraging audience participation. You are the Same, their first collaboration in 2004, was hailed as “divine inspiration” by The Globe and Mail, and “a revelation” by The Toronto Star.
